Yesterday’s Panthers game started off sunny and ended off sunny, but in between was the most rain I’ve seen during a football game since Pittsburgh played Miami during the onset of  hurricane Jeanne in 2004. It started to drizzle in the 2nd quarter, and then the skies totally opened up to a torrential downpour. Downpours [...]

Two weeks after starting my new job in Washington, I took the Megabus this weekend for my first trip back home to Charlotte. I got in late Friday night and I had all Saturday with the family. In the morning we went to get new family photos taken. But then violent storms blew in in [...]

Whether it counted as a White Christmas or not, we had 2-3 inches of snow on the ground the day after Christmas and the kids loved it.

Snow began falling around dinner-time last night, supposedly making it the first White Christmas in Charlotte, NC since 1947.  Most news outlets were reporting 1947 but WBT-AM was reporting that the last White Christmas in Charlotte was in 1989.  So which is it?  Or more importantly, since there are official records, why is there any [...]

Yesterday was almost an exciting day, three different times, but nothing happened.  I actually find it odd that so much could have happened yesterday, yet none of the stories panned out. First,  back on March 28th a quick but violent storm blew threw Charlotte and dumped nickle to quarter sized hail throughout the neighborhood.  (For [...]

On Tuesday Charlotte had the most snowfall in five years. For other parts of the city that meant just two inches but we got only a lawn dusting and no accumulation on the streets. Still, because of the two inches elsewhere, all schools in the county were closed so Maegan stayed home. What did Maegan [...]

It’s raining tonight. It’s far from a torrential downpour but definitely a steady rain. This certainly won’t end our record-setting drought but every little bit helps, and the forecast calls for rain again tomorrow. I can’t even remember the last time it rained in two consecutive days.

August in Charlotte, North Carolina is hot already, but we’re now smack in the middle of the longest heat wave in over a decade. Today’s temperature was an all-time high for this date, 102° in the shade – with over 40% humidity and a heat index of 105° – still in the shade. Here’s the [...]

I took Maegan camping this weekend at McDowell Nature Preserve, which is just a few miles from home. After setting up the tent we set out on a long two hour hike, half of which was on trails we’ve never hiked before. Maegan kept proving to me why she’s a straight-A student, constantly teaching me [...]

Snow dusted the ground this morning and the entire city of Charlotte shut down. [Pause for my northern friends to stop laughing.] Although we didn’t get any snowfall last year, Charlotte does average a few inches of snowfall each year. In 2003 we had one storm that dumped 18 inches on a city that isn’t [...]
