I was excited to learn this week that another professional sports franchise is coming to Charlotte… Major League Lacrosse. Now I admit that I’ve never seen an MLL game but I’ve seen lots of NCAA lacrosse games on ESPNU and lacrosse is a great sport. The only times I’ve ever played lacrosse myself was in junior high gym class, never competitively, but I’ve always liked the sport.

Major League Lacrosse is relatively small but it’s been around for over a decade now. Being a Long Island native, I’ve always liked the fact that one of the existing six MLL teams is the Long Island Lizards.  They play their games at Hofstra University in Hempstead, and Hofstra is a longtime powerhouse of college lacrosse.

The newly announced Charlotte team won’t begin play until spring 2012.  They don’t have a name or colors yet.  In fact, they’re having a contest to name the team on their Facebook page. Why not the “Hornets”?  The name isn’t coming back to the city any other way, and it has a lot of tradition and historical meaning to this city. Whatever their name turns out to be I hope the team succeeds in the Queen City.
