I used to go letterboxing with Maegan. I haven’t quit letterboxing per se but I just haven’t found the time lately. We’ve managed to plant (hide in a publicly accessible location) 8 boxes so far. All but one is now considered retired because they’ve been lost and I choose not to replant them. But the remaining box is our greatest plant yet. Everybody who’s found it raves about the great location and clever hiding spot, which earned it a prestigious “blue diamond” award, signifying that it’s a highly recommended letterbox for others to find. But I just gave it away to a total stranger.
The problem was that my blue diamond letterbox was planted in south Florida. At best I’m only down there once a year, and my box was reported missing last spring. Making matters worse is that I don’t plan on returning to this location again until 2012 and I just thought it would be selfish of me to try to maintain this letterbox that everybody seems to love so much, if I can’t actually be there to take care of it. So I donated this great hiding spot to a dedicated letterboxer who lives in that area and who was willing to replant and take care of it.
Now that I think about it, there’s a location just around the corner from me that would make a good location for a letterbox. I’d be able to take care of one so close. Time to make a new letterbox. Maybe I can get a new blue diamond.
